CHAPTER 26 The warmth of her house was a welcome relief from the winter morning outside. April instantly felt the heat return to her face, though her arms were still slightly numb. She decided she would make a hot drink and take one to her mum to assess the damage, but stopped at the kitchen door, feeling a sudden panic that Zoe would be sat there, waiting for her with a stern expression on her face.

She would have been crying, worried sick all night that her daughter was missing. The catastrophe continued to unfold in April’s mind. She would have text and rang her multiple times, only to realise her phone was in her room. Her mum would look tired, having been up all night searching for her daughter, waiting for any sign of her.

The thoughts were making April tense, as she tentatively opened the kitchen door slightly and peeked into the room.

April sighed. It was empty.

Of course it was - her brain had made it all up. It liked to do that; making April panic about imaginary scenarios, so she would be close to tears, only to then discover that everything was fine. She was met with silence.

She waited for the kettle to boil, before pouring two large mugs, then she put her hands around one of them until she could feel her fingers again.

Sitting at the kitchen table, waiting for her mum to come downstairs, April went over the events of the past few days. Rachel had tried to cool things off with her but then there was last night. That amazing night. She had confidence she’d never seen before. She had made love to a woman, which was something she’d never experienced before with either gender. She had, of course, been nervous; she didn’t have a clue what to do and the thought of someone seeing her naked made her shudder. But Rachel had been confident too and she knew exactly what she was doing, or so it seemed to April. Had she slept with women before?

She pictured the previous night in her head, forcing her to cross her legs, squeezing them together. Her mum wasn’t up yet, she could run back over for a while, she thought, but she knew she couldn’t risk it.

So much had changed since April had arrived in England: she’d made friends, her mum had gone and come back again, she’d lost her virginity, but most importantly, she was falling in love with a woman. Everything that she’d been suppressing regarding her sexuality was circling her brain again. The questions went round and round in her thoughts.

Maybe she was gay, but a small part of her wished it wasn’t true. Why did she have to be different and make life more complicated for herself? She would have to tell her mum eventually, and her friends. But coming out would bring up Rachel and she didn’t want that. Then Rachel would definitely have to move to France.

And why this woman? She pondered. She
